In states that follow the "employment at will" doctrine, you can fire someone for any reason, no matter how silly. You can fire someone because you don't like the color of their shoes or because you heard their favorite ice cream is chocolate. The only real limitation on the ability to fire at will is not being able to fire a protected class, e.g., because of race, religion, gender, etc.

To be sure, you should ask an attorney in your state. You can do so for free at.

Well I will answer the best I know how. If you live in a work at will state then yes it is perfectly legal to fire someone for whatever reason you have. Sometimes they don't even have a reason. (you could take a pen home with you and it could constitute as stealing).
Taxes - well if she wasn't holding out taxes then you will get a 1099 form at the end of the year. And yes she can start holding them out whenever she wants to.

Depends on your state, a right to work state she can fire you for almost any reason or no reason at all.

If she wasnt taking taxes out of your check, that was for her benefit. That is a federal tax crime, she can go to jail for that. did you receive a company check or private check?

but what is you recourse. you dont want your job back do you? to work somewhere where you arent wanted?
